A Practical To Do List Before You Go to Law School

Image
After all is said and done, you have more to do than just apply for law school and wait for it to start in August. If only life were that easy. It might feel as if you're getting a barrage of emails from your law school and there's a gazillion things on your to do list, but I'm here to simplify it a bit for you. Of course, each incoming student is different and you may have some extra things on here that didn't apply to me, but this is a general list to help you keep track of your life. Find an apartment You're going to need a place to live while you're going to law school, especially if you're moving away. Get this out of the way early; you don't want to be stressing out about finding an apartment on top of learning your class schedule and finding your way around the law building on campus. Find roommates If you're looking to find roommates, make sure to get that done as you're looking for an apartment. I personally chose to st

Let's Talk: Goal Setting

Image
Setting goals is an important aspect of getting where you want to be. Unless you are the world's luckiest person and things just fall gently into your lap without you having to lift a finger, you're going to have to work to end up with the life you want. When it comes to creating goals, you should focus on setting both short-term and long-term goals. Short-term goals can be accomplished in a year or less, while long-term goals typically take a few years and are loftier than your short-term goals. Some examples of my short-term and long-term goals, respectively, are to receive at least all B's during my first semester of law school and to graduate law school. I can even break my short-term goal into tinier goals that I can focus on each week or each month. You can also see how I broke up my goal of graduating law school to focus on only one semester. After you write out your goals, it can feel as if you're stuck with them, and if you don't accomplish exactly

My Experience Apartment Hunting

Image
Guess who has an apartment in Denver? Me! I've never had to hunt for an apartment while not living in the same city as where it is. While in undergrad, I lived in the dorms my freshman and sophomore years, and then spent my final two years in the same apartment. However, I was living in Iowa City while I was searching for an apartment, so I was able to be the one doing walk-throughs of all the different places my roommate and I were considering. Because I was unable to be in Denver during my apartment hunt due to working five or six days each week at home in Chicago, my roommate and I had to depend on websites, reviews, and phone calls to get a good idea of the different places we were interested in. One of the biggest things that I used to find an apartment were the reviews. People love to share their opinions on the Internet, so I find reading them, especially from those who may be disgruntled about something, is very beneficial. No matter how great the photos look or ho

Why I'm Excited for Law School

Image
As I sit down and write this, I've just gotten approved for a Denver apartment with my roommate, I've booked my one-way flight, and I'm waiting on my class schedule for my first semester of law school. Holy guacamole. Things are getting REAL. Ever since I actually sent in my law school applications, I've just been dying to actually start. My excitement is so real, and I thought that to keep my emotions high (and so I can reread this when the reality of law school hits me) I would talk about why I'm excited for law school to start. More opportunities to learn I've always loved to learn new information, no matter where I learn it, whether it's in a classroom or on my own time. I know that law school is going to be absolutely full of opportunities to stuff even more things into my brain. In addition to learning new information, I also love learning more about myself and my abilities. One of the most important parts of my undergrad experience was ge

0L Summer Goals

Image
70 days. That's how much time I have before I officially become a law student. Isn't that insane!? As my summer kicks off, I found it important to write down some goals for what I hope to accomplish this summer before I dedicate the next three years of my life to law school. While I'll be spending part of my summer prepping for my move to Denver and law school in general, the goals in this blog will focus on everything that's not school related because this is the last time I'll have a summer to myself. I'm excited to take time for myself this summer, because I spent most of my undergraduate summers working and staying up at school. This is the first summer I'll be living at home with my parents for the entirety of it (even though I'm still working five to six days each week), but I know this summer is going to be important in the long run. Goal 1: Read for fun I've always been a huge reader; my mom used to joke with my elementary school t

LSAT Overview: Logical Reasoning

Image
Even though each section of the LSAT is important, the logical reasoning section takes up half of your scored sections, so it's necessary to put some extra effort into studying for this part. While doing drills while studying, it was easy to find myself dreading the logical reasoning sections. I'd flip the page right after starting my timer during a practice test, I'd have to try hard to keep a feeling of dread from washing over me. Not exactly the feeling you'd want for a test as big as the LSAT. I think I struggled with this section because of how confident I felt in my wrong answers. There's nothing more disappointing than going through the answer key and putting a red "X" through an answer I felt good about. Of course, this happens because it's how the questions are written. Logical reasoning questions test your reading and reasoning abilities, mental discipline, and time management skills, among other things. You're asked to strengthe

Looking Toward June

Image
Happy June! I feel like I say this in every monthly post, but how is it already June? Summer is here (although you wouldn't be able to tell here in Chicago with the endless rain), and I'm on a quick countdown to starting law school, just like I'm sure a lot of you are. Things seem to be happening quickly now that I've paid my two tuition deposits and have submitted all the necessary paperwork to actually attend law school. I've found roommates, we're finishing up the apartment hunt, and I'm waiting until next month to get my orientation week and class schedules. Oh, boy. It's really happening guys. Here's a quick recap of my goals from last month: Reach 650 Instagram followers ( check! ) Reach 20 email followers ( check! ) Write in my journal every morning ( very close to every morning, but no cigar! ) Put a big focus on my health and diet ( check! ) My goals for June are similar to last month's: Find an apartment and sign a l
